The Upper East Side follows Biscayne Boulevard through the postwar motel strip. The Vagabond opened in 1953, designed by Robert Swartburg in the Miami Modern style for motorists arriving on the boulevard. Its roadside identity included neon, a mermaid mosaic in the pool, and a shell-and-dolphin sculpture — local history without the false Rat Pack story later attached to the motel.
