Know your neighborhood
Developers from Virginia platted it starting in 1919 and named it for the valley back home. What grew here instead was a neighborhood: Mediterranean Revival houses and bungalows under big trees, between Calle Ocho and Coral Way, Twelfth Avenue out to Twenty-Seventh. The park on SW 21st Avenue has the pool, and the middle school on 19th Street has been the landmark since the WPA finished it in 1942.
