Third Avenue is the spine. At mid-century its saloons were where the sots washed up — Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend — and most are sports bars now, loud on a playoff night, emptying onto the East 30s after 3 a.m. The hill itself is the Murrays': Robert an importer loyal to the king, Mary the one who, in September 1776, held the British generals at her table with tea, wine and cakes while the Americans slipped north. J.P. Morgan built here; Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt lived a block from him after their 1904 wedding; Cole Porter kept a carriage house on Sniffen Court. The Observer put it on the front page in 2005 as Murray Hell. Christopher Bonanos, who has lived here 35 years, wrote in Curbed that there is no Murray Hill brand — or at least there isn't one yet.
