Before the 1940s, the only dry ground here was five-acre Broadcast Key, where radio had operated since 1926. North Bay Island was created just before World War II, Harbor and Treasure islands followed after it, and the village incorporated in 1945. The three-island city still sits astride the 79th Street causeway between Miami and Miami Beach.
