Know your neighborhood
Hancock Park runs from Wilshire up to Melrose between Highland and Rossmore — about 1,200 houses that George Allan Hancock subdivided in the 1920s, most of them set back fifty feet from the street at his insistence, driveways to the side. The neighborhood wraps around the Wilshire Country Club. In 1928 residents and the city planted fan palms down the Highland Avenue median and built the strip they stand in, Historic-Cultural Monument No. 94 since 1972, and the homeowners association still replaces them out of its own dues and donations. In 1948 Nat King Cole and his family bought a Tudor house here, the first African American family in the neighborhood to do so.
