Joseph Young laid the city out in 1925 and named it for the other Hollywood, where he had lived — so the confusion everyone here grows up correcting is the founder's own doing. He built it on City Beautiful lines: wide boulevards, public parks, and a brick Broadwalk running about two and a half miles along the sand. The circle where Hollywood Boulevard crosses Federal carries his name, and five full-grown baobabs stand in it, one of the few places in the country you can see that. Nobody is certain who planted them.
