Pilsen takes its name from Plzeň, Bohemia — Czech immigrants built Thalia Hall in 1892 modeled on the Prague opera house. When UIC's construction displaced Mexican families from the Near West Side in the sixties, the community moved here and made 18th Street its main stem. Residents know the murals change; the corners don't.
