Allapattah's name comes from the Seminole word for alligator. The city traces settlement to 1856, and rail expansion at the end of the nineteenth century helped turn the area into Miami's largest industrial district. NW 20th Street and NW 14th Street remain the working east-west spine, now carrying the neighborhood trolley past hospitals, shops and public offices.
